While your composite shingle roof offers great durability, that doesn’t mean that it is prone to damage. Extreme weather conditions such as strong winds, high heat, or cold will have a huge negative impact on your roof. Also, if trees fall on your roof, there are very high chances that it will damage some of the composite shingles. If you notice some of your shingles are damaged, here are a few tips that will help you fix them before they become a huge problem.
Removing individual shingles
You will need to know how to remove individual shingles from your roof, before making any repairs. You need the help of a hammer claw (rear part of the hammer), crow-bar, or a pry-bar to remove the composite shingles. With the help of any one of these tools, lift up the composite shingles carefully, separating it from the adhesive and exposing the nails.
Using the hammer claw, remove the nails carefully. Make sure that you don’t apply too much force, as it can damage the surrounding shingles. Once the shingles are loose enough, you can pull them out of your roof.
If one or several of your composite shingles are torn or cracked, then you don’t have to replace all of them. All you need to do is repair the cracks, for the shingles to be as good as new. After lifting the shingle, apply a thick layer of the roofing sealant under the location of the crack. Place the shingle back in its original location and press it firmly.
Apply another layer of roofing sealant on top of the crack and spread it evenly. You can cover up the sealant by sprinkling granules of the composite on the cracked shingle.
As your shingles become older, they are vulnerable to upward or downward curling. You can prolong the inevitable, by gluing the shingle down. To perform this type of repair, you will need the help of a caulking gun. Gently apply the roofing sealant on the corners of the shingle. Keep the shingle down by keeping a heavy object on it. However, avoid using extremely heavy objects as it will damage the shingle. Wait for at least 24 hours, before removing the object from the composite shingle.
These are the tips that you can use to fix the composite shingles.
